About Tasek Bera
Bera is a district in Pahang, Malaysia. Bera district
is founded on February 1, 1992 following the breaking up of the Temerloh district. Once considered as problematic area (illegal land
exploration), Bera emerged as an important district especially in the
agriculture sector. The district got the name from the Malaysia's largest
freshwater lake, Lake Bera. According to
the Orang Asli Semelai, Bera derived its name from a type of seaweed,
‘’Reba’’. Bera district is renowned for Bera Lake, a freshwater lake and its surrounding wetlands, that
has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since November 1994.Tasek Bera is the
largest natural freshwater lake in Malaysia with an area of 6,150 hectares. In
1995, Tasek Bera has been internationally accorded as Wetlands of International
Importance and the first Ramsar Site in Malaysia. This recognition was given a
year after Malaysia became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention (the
world's oldest environmental treaty).
Tasek Bera and its hinterlands of
31,120 hectares covering a complex range of habitats, lakes, rivers and
streams, peat swamp and lowland tropical forests has been gazetted as
Wildlife Reserve Area. At least 100 species of freshwater fish, 224 bird
species and over 68 mammal species roam freely in this protected area. The
pandanus plant dominates the peat swamp and large part of the lake. Endangered
species such as elephant, tiger, wild cat, tapir, malayan gharial and arowana
fish are found over here.
The Semelai aborigines lives in 14
villages around the lake and estimated to be around 4,000
people. Many of them work in a nearby Oil Palm and Rubber estates.
The Semelai Association for Boating and Tourism (SABOT) has been formed to take
part in the homestay and cultural programme for tourist and organising the
eco-adventure activities.
Tasek Bera is about 70 km from
Temerloh town in Pahang. The Pesona Lake Resort is the only comfortable lodging
facility available in Tasek Bera and its rate is reasonable. Various
recreational activities such as jungle trekking, fishing, bird watching,
canoeing and boating in the lake and river system, visiting the herbal garden
and semelai aborigines settlement. Visitors are encourage to participate and
experience the Semelai culture such as collecting the Keruing tree
latex, traditional dancing, harvesting rice and native craft making.
